Day 1 : Beijing, flight arrivals
Passengers are met upon arrival in Beijing and transferred to the five-star Peninsula Palace Hotel, or similar, for a two-night stay. Afternoon visit to the Summer Palace. Welcome Peking Duck dinner.
Day 2 : Beijing
After breakfast, we spend the morning on a tour of Beijing, including the Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City. Afternoon sightseeing program includes the Great Wall and an evening visit to Tiananmen Square. Dinner at a restaurant near the Square.
Day 3 : Beijing
Free day to explore Beijing. Own lunch arrangements. Evening depature of China’s most prestigious private train The « Shangri-La Express ». Next day spent on board as we head for Luoyand.
Day 4 : Luoyang
Luoyang, located in the middle the Yellow River Valley, has an interesting museum containing many relics from the city’s days of glory, including historical maps of the city and artefacts recovered from the tombs, such as sculpted horses and camels. The day is spent touring this ancient city, the Dragon’s Door and the Longmen Grottoes, one of the three major cave clusters in China containing 110,000 statues and 1350 caves and listed under UNESCO World’s Heritage.
Day 5 : Xian
Arrival into the ancient city of Xian. We take a short visit to this city highlights being the Great Mosque, the 14-km city walls, Drum and Bell Towers and Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Main afternoon visit will be to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, discovered by peasants barely 30 years ago. The 6,000 Terracotta figures, arranged in row after row of warriors and horses, are one of the greatest archaeological findings of the 20th century and considered as one of the wonders of the modern world. Dinner and a Dynasty Tang show. Return to the train.
Day 6 : Shangri-La Express
Our day is spent in the Gobi desert, and upon our arrival in Lanzhou we take the line to Golmud. Total time from Gobi to Golmud is approximately 22 hours
Day 7 : Golmud, and the Climb onto the 'Roof of the World’
Morning arrival in Golmud, the starting point of the world's highest rail track of 1142km long, known as the ‘roof of the world’. From here we change trains to travel into high altitude, at a length of 12 hours to Lhasa, capital of Tibet. After travelling for 6 hours from Golmud, we approach the outskirts of this journey’s highest peak, about 3km above sea level and travelling on the world's highest railway. Evening arrival and transfer to the Lhasa Hotel for a four night stay.
Day 8 : Lhasa
Our first day is spent at the hotel for acclimatisation purposes.
Day 9 : Lhasa
On the second day we visit the 13th century Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s holiest shrine and the adjacent Barkhor market. Lunch is after our morning tour and features traditional folk music. In the afternoon we visit the 17th century Potala Palace, former seat of the Tibetan Government and the Dalai Lama’s winter residence. It contains thousands of rooms, dominates the city skyline, and is one of the architectural wonders of the world.
Day 10 : Lhasa
Morning visit to Norbu Lingka, the Dalai Lama’s Summer Palace. Free time in the afternoon to explore Lhasa.
Day 11 : Lhasa, flight departures
Early morning transfer to Lhasa airport for flight departures.
